Best From… Marita – Rough Stuff (2015)
It is the second review published this week and also this time the vocalist is Norwegian 🙂
You should know that “Rough Stuff” was released in July, 2015 and contains 8 songs. It is the first album released by this young Norwegian musician and hopefully her first big step into hard rock/sleaze metal industry.
List of tracks:
I am not a big fan of female hard rock vocalists, but there are few exceptions: Lita Ford, Lee Aaron, Bonnie Tyler, Doro Pesch, Cher and finally Joan Jett. I am more than sure that if you would make someone guess when this album was released, they would say with high probability that the album was released in early 80s.
I am really confused here, because I really like how the guitars are used to make the music rawer on “Hot Rockin’ (Scream N’ Shout)” (imho, the best song on this album) and “I Don’t Give Fuck About You“, but personally I am not convinced to “Fly Among The Stars” that completely does not match rest of the songs as it is too much pop-rock influenced (Kim Wilde/Belinda Carlisle/Madonna).
When it comes to guitars, they are good as they make the songs much heavier in their tone but there is nothing special here and unfortunately I was not surprised at all.
On the other hand, it is an unique album and it seems that it is the first one where: synthpop (second half of “Independent Lady“), early-80s classic heavy metal dominating here (“Hot Rockin’ (Scream N’ Shout)”), pop rock (previously mentioned “Fly Among The Stars“, but also some parts of “Let Me Go“) and pop metal (similar in style to “Bodyrock” album by Lee Aaron from 1989) are well blended in very original way.
My rating: 6,5/10
