A short interview with Workout
WORKOUT’s signature sound is brimming with complex guitar solos and operatic vocal layers. This Brooklyn-based band combines heavy-duty power chords and raucous percussion for a big and bold sound that The New Yorker calls “a hyperactive rock monster born of a union between Roky Erickson and David Bowie.”
WORKOUT was formed in Brooklyn in 2008 by Jack Killen (keys/vocals) and Jason Langdon (bass/vocals), who met while attending college in Portland, OR. The two were later joined by Timothy Traynor (drums/vocals) and fellow college friend Alex Forbes (guitar). Known for their boisterous live shows, WORKOUT has performed coast to coast at renowned venues to include Brooklyn Bowl, Music Hall of Williamsburg, and Rubber Tracks, opening for Haim, White Denim and more.
Rockit Science, the band’s second full-length release, is out now.
Workout – Life is a Nightmare
Maciej Bis: Why did you choose Workout and was it the only name you considered?
Workout: We chose Workout because Veg-out was already taken
MB: Could you also say a few words about each of you?
W: Jack, the Tweaker. Alex, the Comedian. Jason, the Thinker. Timmy, the Lover
MB: When and how did you get the idea for forming the band?
W: Jason was lonely in New York without anyone to play with. He mainly watched Seinfeld re-runs. Then he met Tim at a bar called Enid’s and they went together to an Italian restaurant. Tim played drums on his plate of spaghetti and meatballs, showing off his impressive percussive abilities. Jason was sold. Later, Jack and Forbes got out of prison in California and hitch hiked to the big city but couldn’t get any other job, so the band was formed to keep their parole officers happy.
MB: Do you have in mind recording any videos promoting your last album?
W: We have already done a few for this album, but yes, we will do some more. Music videos are lots of fun!
MB: What bands have inspired you the most and why did you choose to play rock music?
W: THIN LIZZY, WARREN ZEVON, QUEEN, VAN HALEN.
MB: What was the best experience in your career since the time you formed Workout?
W: Playing to a packed house at Brooklyn Bowl was a pretty epic moment. Touring down to SXSW was also loads of fun.
MB: Are you planning to organize some concert tour outside U.S. in the closest future?
W: We would love to play in Europe, Asia and Africa.
MB: Have you already started working on next studio album? If yes, when can we expect it?
W: We will be returning to the studio in March and expect to hear some music from that visit in the next few months
MB: Thank you! I hope that soon you will make a lot of noise in rock music industry!
W: THANK YOU!
