Interview with Reverse Grip
Hey! It is probably the longest interview that I have ever published in this blog, the majority of questions were answered by Sean Broda, 🙂
Shortly about Reverse Grip
They are very high in my most favorite new school bands list. The band was formed by Broda brothers (Sean – guitars, Dylan – drums, Dru – vocals) and Eskander Mirza on bass. For now, Reverse Grip released one EP (2011) and the first studio album is on the way, 🙂
Maciej Bis: Hey, it seems that your ancestors came from Poland – “Broda” means beard in Polish, 🙂 Do you feel related somehow to Poland?
Sean Broda: We’ve always been aware of our Polish roots, however our Grandparents passed away when we were really young so there is actually still a lot about that side of the family we don’t know! We get a lot of comments on our last name, even by people who don’t know it’s Polish! A lot of people find it hard to pronounce which we don’t’ understand hahaha.
MB: What was the first kind of music you listened to? Did you ever dream about having your own rock band when you were children?
Sean: Our parents had a big collection of Beatles records that we always listened to. Dru was really into Elvis at a young age which makes a lot of sense now that he’s the front man. I remember we were listening to ‘Come Together’ by the Beatles and thinking that some of the guitar parts were the heaviest thing I’d ever heard hahahah and then I heard AC/DC Back in Black…..
Dylan had the dream at a really early age. He always wanted to play the drums professionally and make a career from it in some way. I will never forget watching my Dad play guitar and knowing that I would do anything to play it really well. I think we all wanted to do something amazing at a young age and I think that playing in a band was inevitable.
MB: Why have you decided to play sleaze / glam metal and when did your “adventure” start?
Sean: I quickly gravitated to anything with strong guitars and big solos which eventually led me to Hair Metal. You can’t beat the over the top solos and shredding. Dru found Guns n’ Roses early on and never turned back. Axl Rose’s vocals have influenced him a lot and I think that there isn’t a style of music that grabs us more and gives us chills…..everything else is just so boring. We love the idea of being a ‘Rockstar’, not some guy that stands on stage in street clothes and sings crappy songs about how his parents don’t understand him hahahaha. All of our favourite bands and artists are larger than life!!
MB: I always ask about it. 🙂 What is the best thing about being a rock & roll musicians?
Sean: The girls
Dru: Freedom, Booze
Dylan: Seeing the world
MB: Now, I would like to ask about your favorite bands, both from 80s and new-school.
Sean: I’m a huge fan of all 1970’s-80s Glam, Hair, Hard Rock and anything with guitars, but I’ll say: AC/DC, Ozzy, B.B. King, Whitesnake and Motley Crue from the Old School. Crashdiet, Hardcore Superstar, Falling In Reverse and Airbourne of New School.
Dru: Guns n’ Roses of course! Love Britny Fox as well. Most of the new bands Sean named I like to, especially Crashdiet and Hardcore Superstar.
Dylan: Tower of Power and Gn’R….. I don’t like anything new hahaha!
MB: Could you tell something about the songs from your upcoming album?
Sean: They are amazing! We’ve finally all written a full album together and everyone’s strengths have come through huge! They are definitely different from our EP Nasty Reputation. It is more influenced by Aerosmith and Gn’R so all the songs have more interesting structure, more feeling and groove to them. Dru’s vocals are pretty insane in a lot of spots, there are a lot of guitar solos and the drums will pound your balls through the floor!!!! We are having a hard time deciding what our favourite songs are and what we want to release as a single.
MB: When will the next video will be recorded and released?
Sean: We are working so hard on our tour of Japan/Australia right now and we’ve just started booking Europe for November through December. Between getting the songs mixed, mastered and pressed before we leave we probably won’t be able to jump into a video until we come back in October and release the record in North America. But, we are going to film the whole tour and will have a lot of hilarious footage to use for many videos! We want to have something out by November 2012.
MB: I know that a European tour is on the way. Where will we see you this autumn/winter – do you already have confirmed venues? How about a concert in Poland, 🙂 ?
Sean: The tour is actually being booked right now! It’s supposed to be 10 countries including Poland!!! Hopefully we can find some things out about our family roots. We really want to hit Germany and the Scandinavia area because the Rock scene is so strong. But nothing is confirmed yet so you’ll just have to wait and hope the Grip Machine rolls through your country!!
MB: What are your plans for the next year?
Sean: Next year we want to have as many festivals booked as we can. We have talked about touring South America and getting back to Japan and Europe as much as possible. Of course we’ll be writing non-stop, making videos, drinking, partying, pillaging and playing the best Rock n Roll the world has seen in years.
MB: Thanks for all the answers and I wish all your dreams become true – I am certain that it is only a matter of time when you hit rock music charts. Let’s keep the sleaze alive!
Sean: This music is becoming hugely popular again because it’s Fucking Good, and the world needs real RockStars and Heavy Metal Gods. There is a growing fan base and of course many people like yourself who are giving bands the chance to reach fans around the world. Rock N’ Roll has never left and you can see that through the older bands like AC/DC, Motley Crue and KISS…. They still sell out huge tours…. But there needs to be new bands that can rock as hard and there hasn’t been any new music until now that can stand up to the challenge. It needs to make you throw your fist in the air and of course make you really horny 😉
