Band Of The May ’11 – Kix
Today, I’m gonna to describe one of the first and most underrated glam metal bands – Kix.
Who, where and when?
‘Kix’ was founded in December of 1977 in Hagerstown (Maryland) by Ronnie Younkins (guitar) and Donnie Purnell (bass). The next members were Brian Forsythe and Donnie Spence. Steve Whiteman joined band after few previous vocalist. Firstly, band was named ‘The Shooze‘. In 1979 after few changes in ‘crew’ a line-up crystallized. They changed name of the band for three times in total. 1
They changed their name to “The Generators,” when they realized there was another band out of Chicago, named “The Shooze.” They began recording their first album on Atlantic Records in 1980 before eventually settling on “Kix.”
First line-up as Kix:
- Steve Whiteman – lead vocals
- Ronnie “10/10” Younkins, Brian “Damage” Forsythe – guitars
- Donnie Purnell – bass, keyboards, backing vocals
- Jimmy “Chocolate” Chalfant – drums, backing vocals
Debut album (1981)
Well, their first self-titled album was released in 1981 and was the first one kept in glam metal style, so in fact they were pioneers :D. Maybe, then Kix didn’t get so much popularity, but there is no doubt that band ‘started an avalanche’.
Kix – Atomic Bombs
Kix – Kix Are For Kids
Kix – Cool Kids (1983)
Two years after, Kix released their second studio album (IMO the best one) in strict glam metal movement. I like it, because this album is kept in very warm atmosphere, just take a look at lyrics.
A video for ‘Cool Kids’ is one of my first & best glam metal videos – great vocal, great performance.
Kix – Cool Kids
Kix – Body Talk
Kix – Midnite Dynamite (1985)
The third album continues Kix successes and features great singles. Below album cover, you can see ass-kicking videos, yeah!
Kix – Cold Shower
Kix – Midnite Dynamite
Kix – Blow My Fuse (1988)
There is no doubt, that this album is the most recognizable and successful album by Kix, album peaked on 46th place on Billboard 200. 2 You must take a look at this, especially on ‘Don’t Close Your Eyes‘ – great ballad charted #11 on Billboard Hot 1003 and ‘Cold Blood‘.
Kix – Cold Blood
Kix – Don’t Close Your Eyes
Kix – Hot Wire (1991)
‘Hot Wire’ repeated success of its precedent only partially. It wasn’t sold in so many copies although album was very positively rated by critics. There aren’t any videos recorded for this album probably. Album was ranked #64 on Billboard 200. 4
Kix – Rock & Roll Overdose
Kix – Pants On Fire
Kix – Show Business (1995)
As you know, glam metal collapsed mainly due to grunge and other genres movements. This album was also unfortunately a flop, and for now this is the last studio album released by Kix. In this year, Kix also came dawn and reunited eight years later in 2003.
